Five Signs You're Ready to Make Your Next Move

Not every opportunity is the right opportunity, and not every moment is the right time. Making a major move at the wrong time, or from a position of weakness, can create unnecessary challenges. How do you know when you're genuinely ready to take your next significant step?
Your Current Foundation Is Stable
You don't need everything to be perfect, but you do need a stable foundation to build from. This means your existing business or career is functioning adequately without constant firefighting. Your team understands their roles. Your financial position gives you some breathing room rather than forcing desperate decisions from a position of crisis. A stable foundation means you're making a proactive choice rather than a reactive escape.
You Have Clear Reasons and Measurable Goals
Moves driven by vague dissatisfaction rarely succeed. Instead, you should be able to articulate specifically why you want to make this move and what you hope to achieve. Can you define success? Can you explain to your team why this move matters? Clarity about your "why" and your desired outcomes indicates you've done the thinking necessary to attempt something ambitious.
You've Secured the Right Capabilities or Partnerships
Assess honestly whether you have the skills, expertise, and resources needed for your next move. If significant gaps exist, do you have a concrete plan to fill them through hiring, training, partnerships, or external expertise? Moving forward without these capabilities creates unnecessary risk. Being ready means having access to what you need, not necessarily owning everything internally.
Your Key Stakeholders Understand and Support the Direction
Your team, board, investors, and other critical stakeholders don't need to be enthusiastic about every aspect of your move, but they should understand the reasoning and generally support the direction. Have you communicated your thinking? Have you addressed their concerns? Do they understand what they'll need to do differently? Buy-in and understanding from key stakeholders dramatically increases the likelihood of successful implementation.
You Have a Realistic Plan and Adequate Resources Allocated
Ambitious moves require resources: time, money, and attention. Do you have a concrete plan outlining the steps required? Have you allocated sufficient budget, personnel, and leadership attention? Have you thought through potential obstacles and how you'll overcome them? Readiness means having both a plan and the resources to execute it, not just the desire to move forward.
When these five indicators align, you're in position to make your move effectively and successfully.
